Bodleian Library considers lending books after 410 years
Consideration might still take some time…
Any article that includes the word scaremongering is good in my book.
I was taking a swig of soda when I read this and nearly sprayed it all over the place. Now my jaw is hanging open and I’ve yet to close it. I was there last year and I can’t imagine that they would ever actually lend books out. However, it looks like there’s no done deal as of yet. Still, what an interesting prospect! I particularly love the pledge all users have to sign:
Users were forced to take an oath in Latin, but are now able to sign a pledge, which reads: “I hereby undertake not to remove from the Library, nor to mark, deface, or injure in any way, any volume, document or other object belonging to it or in its custody; not to bring into the Library, or kindle therein, any fire or flame, and not to smoke in the Library; and I promise to obey all rules of the Library.”
